Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa of Uruguay

On April 29, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing with Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa of Uruguay, who came to China for the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF).

Wang Yi noted that this BRF has set the goal, charted the course, built the platform and improved the framework for high-quality joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, initiating the new phase of the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative among various countries. As strategic partners, China and Uruguay have always enjoyed mutual understanding, trust and support, and both sides have reached new consensus on the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative. The Chinese side is willing to, together with the Uruguayan side, actively implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state and the outcomes of this forum, continuously enhance exchanges and cooperation in areas including trade, agriculture, animal husbandry, fishery, infrastructure construction, and people-to-people and cultural engagement, and maintain coordination and cooperation in international organizations and multilateral mechanisms, so as to elevate China-Uruguay strategic partnership to new stages.

Rodolfo Nin Novoa expressed that Uruguay and China are good friends and important strategic partners. Developing relations with China is a national policy of Uruguay. The Uruguayan side always actively supports the Belt and Road Initiative, sincerely congratulates on the complete success of the BRF, and completely agrees on and supports the idea and proposition put forward by President Xi Jinping at the forum. The Uruguayan side stands ready to participate in the process of joint construction in a more in-depth manner, expand bilateral cooperation in various fields, strengthen communication and coordination in international affairs, and safeguard together multilateralism and free trade.

After the meeting, both sides also signed the Treaty on Extradition Between the People’s Republic of China and the Oriental Republic of Uruguay.
