Wang Yi Meets with Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana

On April 26, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing with Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, who was in China for the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.

Wang Yi said that the UN ESCAP covers key regions of the Belt and Road Initiative. It signed a letter of intent on cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative with the Chinese side three years ago and has been at the forefront of multilateral institutions' participation in the cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. Over the past three years, the willingness to cooperate has been put into action and tangible results have been achieved. The Chinese side is ready to work with the UN ESCAP to uphold the concept of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, focus on development goals and upgrade cooperation. The Chinese side will continue to support the UN ESCAP in playing an active role in regional economic cooperation and be a pacemaker of the UN system in jointly building the Belt and Road Initiative.

Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana said that the UN ESCAP attaches importance to China's development achievements and experience and is willing to take the opportunity of signing the memorandum of understanding on cooperation to jointly promote the Belt and Road Initiative and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable development with the Chinese side.

After the meeting, both sides signed a memorandum of understanding between the People's Republic of China and the United Nations Economic and Social commission for Asia and the Pacific on advancing the Belt and Road Initiative for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
