Xi Jinping Meets with Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Christine Lagarde

On April 24, 2019, President Xi Jinping met with Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Christine Lagarde at the Great Hall of the People.

President Xi Jinping pointed out that Ms. Christine Lagarde not only actively promotes the cooperation between the IMF and China but also supports the international cooperation of the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, which wins the appreciation from the Chinese side. China speaks highly of its good relations with the IMF and hopes to continue to deepen the cooperation between the two sides. At present, more and more countries are participating in the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, which fully proves that the Belt and Road Initiative is in line with the development needs of various countries and enjoys wide popularity from people. We welcome more active participation of the IMF and other international institutions in the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative and are willing to, through this cooperation, provide better public goods for the countries along the Belt and Road.

Xi Jinping stressed that China has always supported a strong and well-resourced IMF. He hoped that the relevant quota and governance reforms will keep pace with the times, reflect the representation and voice of emerging market countries, and be consistent with their status in the world economy.

Christine Lagarde said that the Belt and Road Initiative is an important manifestation of China's leadership in international affairs. I highly value China's leading role in supporting multilateralism. The world needs China, and global economic growth cannot be achieved without China's sustained development. China's economic policy is prudent and effective. The IMF attaches importance to its cooperative partnership with China, thanks the Chinese side for its support over a long period of time, and is ready to provide assistance for the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative.
